Simone Biles led Team USA to a gold medal in the gymnastics team event as she became the most-decorated US gymnast in Olympic history. Biles, who has now won eight Olympic medals, also became the oldest American female gymnast to win a gold medal in history. The 27-year-old, alongside teammates Jordan Chiles, Sunisa Lee, and Jade Carey, produced a score of 171.296, finishing ahead of Italy and Brazil. Team USA held the all-round lead after the uneven bars, vault, and balance beam, before Biles sealed the medal with a 14.666 on the floor exercise. The win comes three years after Biles withdrew from the Tokyo Games after experiencing "twisties,” with Team USA settling for bronze. "They called it their redemption tour, and that's what it is. They wanted the gold they couldn't get in Tokyo. Simone was glad it was over for today. The whole team hasn't been easy; it's had its ups and downs, so to make it happen was just a relief," said Coach Cecile Landi. Biles has also advanced to the all-around, vault, floor, and beam finals as she looks to add to her five Olympic gold medals.
