US gymnast Jordan Chiles has broken her silence after she was stripped of the bronze medal that she won during the floor event at the Paris Olympics. Chiles lost the medal to Romanian Ana Barbosu following an appeal by Romania’s Olympic Committee to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). “While celebrating my Olympic accomplishments, I heard the devastating news that my bronze medal had been stripped away. I have no words. This decision feels unjust and comes as a significant blow, not just to me, but to everyone who has championed my journey,” said Jordan Chiles. The 23-year-old added that the “unprompted racially driven attacks” she has received online are “wrong” and “extremely hurtful.” Chiles had originally scored 13.666 in the event, putting her in fifth place; however, her score was upgraded to 13.766 following an inquiry into her difficulty rating by her coach. Romania’s Olympic Committee appealed the decision after it appeared that the inquiry by Chiles’ coach was submitted four seconds outside the time limit. CAS, who upheld the appeal, announced that they wouldn’t hear a counter-appeal from USA Gymnastics (USAG), despite the emergence of new evidence. The evidence, provided by USAG, includes a video of Chiles’ coach filing the inquiry just 47 seconds after her original score was posted.
