Toyota is set to return to Formula 1 after a 15-year absence as the Japanese manufacturer agreed to become a technical partner of Haas. There will be Toyota branding on Haas cars from next week’s United States Grand Prix in Austin, with the automaker set to provide “design, technical and manufacturing services.” However, according to Tokyo chairman Akio Toyoda, the news will not mean the return of the Toyota Works team, which operated in F1 until 2009. “I think that, somewhere deep in his heart, that ordinary older car-loving guy Akio Toyoda had always regretted having blocked, by pulling out of F1, Japanese youths’ path toward driving the world’s fastest cars. That said, with the media watching my every step, I dare to add that I still believe my decision as the president of Toyota to withdraw from F1 was not wrong,” said Akio Toyoda, Toyota Chairman. Haas will still race under its own name, with its engines continuing to be supplied by Ferrari through the 2028 season. Team principal Ayao Komatsu has said that he informed Ferrari boss Fred Vasseur of the discussions with Toyota “from the very early stages.” Tomoya Takahashi, head of Toyota’s Gazoo racing division, noted that the deal will allow the automaker to “cultivate drivers, engineers, and mechanics.”
