Red Bull driver Max Verstappen extended his lead at the top of the Formula 1 drivers’ standings after he finished ahead of rival Lando Norris at the United States Grand Prix. Verstappen, who is aiming to secure his fourth straight world championship, finished third ahead of McLaren’s Norris in fourth after the latter received a five-second penalty. The Dutchman, who also captured the sprint race in Austin, leads Norris by 57 points with only 146 points left to play for in the remaining five races. Verstappen can clinch the title at the Las Vegas Grand Prix if he wins the next three races and the corresponding sprint races, even if Norris finishes second in all of them. The 27-year-old could also win the championship one race earlier at the Brazilian Grand Prix in Sao Paulo if he wins the race and Norris doesn’t seal enough points. Verstappen can also finish second to Norris in each remaining race and still join Sebastian Vettel and Alain Prost on four titles each. Norris could close the gap if he wins the next two races and Verstappen, who hasn’t finished below sixth this season, doesn’t score any points. The 24-year-old can capture his maiden title if he wins every race and Verstappen finishes fourth, with the British driver needing help off other drivers.
