Formula 1 heads to South America and more specifically Sao Paulo, Brazil, as the 2024 season begins to reach its climax. The Interlagos Circuit, which is about 2.7 miles long, will host the 21st Grand Prix of the season with the drivers’ and constructors’ championships in the balance. Brazil held a Grand Prix at the circuit, which is named after Brazilian driver Jose Carlos Pace, in 1975, with the upcoming race set to be the 41st edition of the event. The circuit is the second highest on the Formula 1 calendar at 800 meters in altitude, while being the fourth shortest behind Monaco, Zandvoort and Mexico. Kick Sauber’s Valterri Bottas set the fastest lap ever at the circuit in 2018 while driving for Mercedes with a time of 1 minute and 10.540 seconds. Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton has won the event more than any other active driver with three victories, followed by Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, who has won the event twice. Interlagos is also the only circuit to have a sprint race every year since the format was introduced in 2021, with Verstappen winning the four sprint races this season. Verstappen, who won the Grand Prix last year after clinching pole position, heads into the race 47 points clear of title rival and McLaren driver Lando Norris. The three-time world champion can’t win the world title in Sao Paulo as there are 120 points still to play for in the remaining four races. McLaren travel to Sao Paulo with a 12-point lead at the top of the constructors’ standings ahead of Red Bull as they look to clinch their first title since 1998.
