Michelle Obama has come to the defense of Simone Biles and Jordan Chiles following criticism of their behavior on the podium at the Paris Olympics. The two American gymnasts, who won silver and bronze respectively in the women’s floor final, were seen bowing to Brazil’s Rebeca Andrade as she received her gold medal. While many hailed the gesture as a touching display of sportsmanship, NFL player Marlon Humphrey called it “disgusting” on social media. “I’m still not over this beautiful moment of sisterhood and sportsmanship… You can just feel the love shining through these ladies”, Michelle Obama, X. Biles, explaining the gesture, noted the significance of an all-Black podium, saying, “It was just the right thing to do”. This controversy is not the first time the US gymnastics team has faced criticism. Earlier this year, former teammate MyKayla Skinner called the team “lazy,” sparking backlash. Despite the criticism, Biles and her team dominated the Olympics, finishing with a haul of ten medals, including three golds.
