Williams have announced that they are replacing Logan Sargeant with Franco Colapinto for the remainder of the 2024 Formula 1 season. Sargeant, who was set to lose his seat to Carlos Sainz next season, has seen his removal brought forward following his crash at the Dutch Grand Prix. The 23-year-old has been unable to register a single point this season and has only registered one point across the 36 Formula 1 races he’s featured in. “We have just brought a large upgrade to the car and need to maximize every points-scoring opportunity in a remarkably tight midfield battle. We also believe in investingin our young drivers in the Williams Racing Driver Academy, and Franco is getting a fantastic opportunity to demonstrate what he is capable of,” said James Vowles, Team Principal. Colapinto, who has previously driven for Williams at Silverstone during practice in July, will make his competitive debut at the Italian Grand Prix. The 21-year-old noted that joining the team in the middle of a season will be an "enormous learning curve but I am up for the challenge.” Colapinto becomes the 49th driver to race for Williams in Formula 1 history, while also being the first driver from Argentina in 23 years.
