Kenya’s Ruth Chepngetich clocked a time of two hours, nine minutes and 56 seconds to break the women's world record and win the Chicago Marathon. Chepngetich, who surpasses Ethiopia’s Tigst Assefa's previous record by nearly two minutes, becomes the first woman ever to run the event in under two hours and 10 minutes. "I feel so great; I'm proud of myself and I thank God for the victory and the world record. This is my dream that has come true. I fight a lot thinking about the world record and I have fulfilled it and I’m much grateful,” said Ruth Chepngetich. Chepngetich captured her third career win in Chicago by breaking the world record, after previously winning the event in 2021 and 2022. Four of the five fastest marathon times recorded by a woman have been clocked on Chicago’s flat course over the last six years. Chepngetich and compatriot John Korir, who won the men’s event in the windy city, dedicated their performances to the late Kelvin Kiptum. Kiptum set the current world record for the men’s marathon in Chicago last year before tragically dying in a car accident in February.
