Australian Coach Questions Legitimacy Of Pan's WR Swim

Australian swimming coach and former Olympian Brett Hawke has questioned China’s Pan Zhanle’s world record he set at the Paris Olympics. Pan stormed to a gold medal in the 100-meter freestyle, winning the race by a body length and slashing his own world record by half a second. The 19-year-old became the first swimmer at the Games to beat a world record, with the pool’s shallow depth being attributed to slower times. The record comes in the midst of a Chinese doping scandal, with the country’s anti-doping authorities dismissing failed tests from some of its swimmers. Pan wasn’t among those athletes who failed their tests; however, Hawke shared his speculation of the swimmer’s performance on Instagram. “That’s not real; you don’t beat that field. Kyle Chalmers, David Popovici, Jack Alexy, you don’t beat those guys by one full body length in 100 freestyle. That’s not humanly possible, OK, so don’t sell it to me; don’t shove it down my throat. It’s not real,” said Brett Hawke Chalmers, who captured the silver medal in the race, said that you have to trust everyone’s “staying true to the integrity of sport” and that Pan “deserved the gold medal.”
