Tennis star Simona Halep has filed a lawsuit against a Canadian health supplements company for damages in excess of $10 million. Halep, who is currently serving a four-year doping ban, submitted the complaint against Quantum Nutrition to New York’s Supreme Court. The Romanian tested positive for roxadustat at the 2022 US Open, a substance that is banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). Halep has said she was using supplements from Quantum Nutrition, also known as Schinoussa Superfoods, during the tournament in New York. According to the 32-year-old’s complaint, roxadustat is not listed on the product’s label with the company being accused of acting “carelessly”. Company founder John Koveos responded to the company’s link to the doping case in October 2023, saying “they needed someone to blame”. Kaveos added that his company supplies supplements to many athletes with Halep “not the only athlete using that particular product”.
