As the sun sets, tables and mats are set up along a roadside in Karachi, Pakistan's largest city, ready to welcome fasting people from impoverished families and travelers to break their fast for free during the holy month of Ramadan. The organizers of these tables say that around 2,000 people, mostly from needy families, come daily to break their fast at sunset during Ramadan. They explain that many of those who break their fast at these tables prefer to receive free meals on the roadside because of the high cost of food during Ramadan or because they cannot return home at sunset. Therefore, they try, as much as possible, to break their fast with a group to feel at home. Pakistan is a predominantly Muslim country, with Muslims making up more than 90 percent of its total population of approximately 208 million.
